  • It has taken over half a century since his death for a book to be devoted to the early twentieth-century French painter Octave Morillot. His life (1878 1931) is full of eccentricities and contrasts his aristocratic birth compelled him to follow a military career in the Navy, but his various campaigns led him to discover new horizons, and he finally chose to live and paint under the tropical sun of French Polynesia. 'But now another question arises 'Paint what?' A painter is not a pieceworker, but a gentleman with a lively sensibility who, struck by precise light effects, that vary with his personality, delights in reproducing them, and therefore does so with emotion. For without emotion there is no beauty in the work. In Tahiti, and in Tahiti alone, did I feel that precious artistic emotion, the spark that begets courage and conviction. I cannot find words to paint what I want to say and to express how deeply Tahiti thrilled my artistic sensibility and how intensely I strive to convey in colour what I feel. As regards the reason for this, it should be sought beyond my mere self I am but an instrument.' Thus Octave Morillot's goal is to magnify sensations by a harmonious orchestration of colour and composition, to convey a sense of the life of the vahine and the tane, regardless of artistic trends or schools. In producing the book, the author seeks to restore to favour Octave Morillot's pictorial work by presenting a monograph of his life and a catalogue raisonne, completed by his writings, known or rediscovered, as well as press reviews and letters.
